Week 2
Paula Payne

Lab 1
Objective: Exemplify your understanding of the principles and elements covered this week.

Principles:

Balance
Balance refers to the distribution of space or weight between the elements of a design. It is a very important principle because it is one of the first principles the user reacts to. Balance can be symmetrical (equal), asymmetrical (unequal) or radial symmetry (elements spiral in or out of a circular path).

Proximity
Proximity refers to the logical placement of elements on a page, e.g., how elements are grouped together. It is an important principle in navigation when you are using icons along with descriptive text. The text must be in close proximity to the icon so the user can see the relationship between the two. It is also an important principle when working with captions and headlines.

Elements:

Texture/pattern
Texture is the surface quality of an object. However, since the web is two dimensional, texture in the web world refers to visual texture, i.e., the illusion of texture.

Typography
Typography serves two functions: one as a design element (shape, line, texture) that can enhance the design and the other to communicate through written words.
